Why this exists

Most hunting gear coverage online is written by people who have not used the gear. It reads like a spec sheet with adjectives, it ranks whatever pays the most, and it is very hard to tell the difference between a tested recommendation and a guess.

Thirty Before Sunrise is an attempt at the opposite. Every article says what it is based on. If we handled the gear, we say so and describe the conditions. If an article is a research roundup rather than a field test, it says that too, at the top, where you will see it before you spend money.

What we cover

Hunting gear — optics, apparel, boots, packs, treestands, trail cameras, archery accessories, calls and decoys. Alongside that, the craft: scouting and land management, season and regulation explainers, tactics, and camp cooking.

We do not cover firearms or ammunition, and we do not cover fishing. Shooting light and season structure are squarely in scope and are some of the most useful things we publish.

How it is funded

Through affiliate links and, in time, sponsorship. Those arrangements never determine a verdict or a ranking, and every page carrying them says so. How we test, disclose, and correct things is in the editorial policy.

Who publishes it

Thirty Before Sunrise is the media arm of Alces, a service that helps outdoor gear brands understand how they are represented by AI assistants and search engines. That relationship is worth stating plainly, because it is unusual and because it could look like a conflict.

It is not one, for a specific reason: Alces sells visibility analysis to brands, not coverage. A brand cannot buy a review here, a ranking here, or a mention here, and nothing a brand does with Alces affects what this publication writes about it. What Alces does get from this site is a demanding customer of its own thesis — if our articles are not genuinely useful and genuinely citable, the argument behind Alces does not hold.

If you think a piece of coverage here has been influenced by that relationship, email aiden@thirtybeforesunrise.com. We would rather hear it.
